Why two separate guides? – What You Need to Know About The Differences Between Standard and Toy Poodles
What’s not to like about Poodles? Whether you prefer the small and cute Toy Poodle or the regal Standard Poodle, both are highly intelligent, quick learners and make wonderful companions.
But, although the AKC breed standard for the Toy and Standard Poodle is exactly the same, when it comes to temperament and behaviour, there are some significant differences that you need to be aware of:
Toy Poodles | Standard Poodles | |
Temperament | The Toy Poodle is often needy, attention seeking and nervous. | The Standard Poodle generally has a stable temperament and is very sociable with other dogs and children. |
Activity levels | The Toy Poodle is constantly on the go, whether inside or out, and needs lots of discipline. | The Standard Poodle is energetic but requires his owner’s input, through training and exercise, to channel that energy in a productive way. |
Unwanted Behavior | Standard Poodles are large dogs which need to be kept under control at all times. The right kind of exercise, training and socialization are key to ensure they display no aggression or unruly behavior. | Owners of Toy Poodles, on the other hand, will experience the nuisance of a yappy, clingy and fearful dog if they do not provide the right training. |
Health | Different sizes means different stresses and strains on joints and organs and a different approach to diet and activity. That is why at Poodle Savvy, we have written separate books for Standard and Toy Poodles so that you can be sure that you have the most relevant information for your specific needs. |
